At our core, we believe that business profitability is not just important, but essential. It provides the sustainable foundation required to execute our environmental and social initiatives—keeping the lights on, maintaining a better quality of living, and supporting our trade partners.
However, profitability isn't everything; we actively prioritise impact over profits. Quality remains our supreme requirement as we balance what is good for the environment with the affordability needs of the community we serve. While adopting sustainability practices remains a choice for profitable businesses, we strive to improve every year by collaborating with like-minded partners to achieve a net positive impact for all stakeholders.
Some of our current initiatives include:
- Direct Trade Coffee: from 2025 onwards, we source coffee from smallholder Indian farmers through our alliance with Black Baza Coffee (India). The coffees are grown organically using regenerative farming practices that enable local flora and fauna to thrive, while our direct purchasing improves the living standards of the farmers who depend on these crops for sustenance.
- Coffee Grounds Recycling: We partner with ReGround and neighbourhood community farms to divert spent coffee grounds from landfills, repurposing them into compost to avoid harmful methane emissions.
- Soft Plastic Upcycling: In collaboration with local artisan Cesar Marulanda (AORACREO), we upcycle the plastic and jute bags used to transport our green coffee beans into functional everyday items like pouches and totes, extending the lifespan of the materials and supporting a local business.
- Reduce, Return & Reuse: At Proppa South, our benches and shelving are built from repurposed shipping pallets. We also encourage local customers to bring their own bags, containers, and bottles, and we offer returnable packaging to reduce single-use items.
